The Mentor Program is a vital component of 41B Veterans Treatment Court. Every participant is assigned his or her own Veteran mentor that they will keep throughout the program.
Each mentor works one-on-one with their assigned participant and serves as an extension of the treatment court team. Mentors act as both an ally and guide, ensuring that every participating Veteran receives the services that they need. No one goes it alone! Many mentors have served in combat theaters from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan. The 41B VTC Mentor Corps is comprised of a diverse group of dedicated individuals who represent all military branches.

Many Mentors are not just Veterans, but are also graduates of the Veterans Treatment Court Program. So impacted by their experience here, they feel compelled to give back and help others. They know firsthand the difficulties that the participants face.
Mentors are often assigned to a participant with like service, age, gender, experience, etc. The particular skills of the Mentor and the needs of the Veteran are also factors in Mentor assignment.
Mentors serve a variety of roles, including coach, facilitator, advisor, sponsor, and supporter. Mentors provide feedback and encourage participants to become better. They help their mentee set and achieve goals, not only within the program, but in life! The bond between the mentor and mentee is a critical ingredient to success in the program.
Veteran Mentors and Support Volunteers are a vital part of the VTC Program.

Terry Theuninck (1947-2020) was a beloved mentor at 41B VTC. Terry was also a graduate of our program. He served proudly in the US Army in Vietnam. His dedication to our program continues to inspire us- so much that we created an award in Terry's name. The Terry Theuninck Award is bestowed upon a mentor, team member, or volunteer whose devotion and service to our program rises to the level worthy of the name.
The Annual Terry Theuninck Award has been awarded to Shawn Bielecki for outstanding service to our Mentor Program in 2021.
Justice For Vets' publication series "Dispatch from the Front Lines" is the only online resource for new and existing veterans treatment court professionals. Each dispatch offers guidance on a number of key topics, from higher education to working with VSOs and federal agencies.
